DR Congo Ebola Cases Top 300 as Outbreak Expands

(MENAFN) The number of confirmed Ebola infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo has climbed above 300, while fatalities linked to the virus have increased to 48, according to updated figures released Monday by the Health Ministry.

Health officials said the outbreak continues to widen its reach, with cases now reported across 23 health zones spanning the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

The hardest-hit area remains Ituri, where confirmed infections have surpassed 260 amid ongoing security challenges that have complicated public health operations.

Authorities warned that response efforts are being hindered by community resistance in the provincial capital of Bunia and the northeastern town of Nizi. Officials also cited the spread of rumors and misinformation as major obstacles to containing the virus.

In a positive development, health authorities announced Monday that four Ebola patients had recovered and were released from the Evangelical Medical Center in Bunia.

The latest update came as World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrapped up a visit to Congo on Monday. During the trip, he met with President Felix Tshisekedi to review measures aimed at tackling the Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak.

Authorities and international partners have strengthened treatment capacity by opening a new 60-bed Ebola treatment facility in Bunia, while vaccine trials are also underway as part of broader containment efforts.

Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya said Bunia Airport resumed operations on Monday after authorities installed monitoring systems for arriving and departing passengers. The airport had previously been restricted to humanitarian flights and is expected to facilitate the delivery of critical outbreak response support.

The current Ebola outbreak was officially declared on May 15.
