Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Death Toll Climbs Above Hundred
The Ministry of Health said a total of 101 people have died since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15. Officials also estimated the case fatality rate at 18.4%.
Data provided by the ministry shows that confirmed infections have now reached 550 cases, with the disease continuing to spread across multiple regions.
The outbreak has expanded to 25 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, highlighting a widening geographic impact.
Health officials also reported seven recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 19.
Authorities said the most affected area remains Ituri, which accounts for 17 of the 25 impacted health zones.
The outbreak, caused by the Ebola virus disease of the Bundibugyo strain, is still showing an overall upward trajectory in weekly trends, according to health officials.
They added that a recent slight dip in the epidemic curve may be linked to delays in updating laboratory data rather than a real slowdown in transmission.
Efforts including surveillance, patient management, and community awareness campaigns are continuing across the affected regions as authorities work to contain the spread.
